St Luke's Church Players forthcoming production is a musical stage adaptation of Thomas Hardy's classic tale of rural romance, "Under the Greenwood Tree". The play has been written by the Players' Secretary, Jonathan Rowe who has written five shows for the group since 1991.
"Under the Greenwood Tree" is set in the 1840s in the Dorset village of Mellstock and tells the story of the new village schoolmistress, Fancy Day and the three men who fall in love with her. Which one will she marry?
The story is set against the background of the changing seasons of the year from one Christmas to the next and includes carols and period songs such as " Hark the Herald Angels Sing", "While Shepherds Watched", " The Last Rose of Summer", "The Gypsy Rover" and "Widdicombe Fair". The production features a cast of 33 aged from 13 to 74 and combines some earthy humour with more poignant moments to give a refreshing and lively start to the festive season.

Things I would like to improve
Send your images as jpegs to Rosie by email. In the body of the email give some explanation of why you've chosen these imagesThings I would like to improve
The club aims to show these images at the camera club meeting of May7th. Initially it would be of interest just to see what comes out of this as a visual exercise.
Newsflash: The first newsletter is now online here!
Bristol's new interactive online map now has a brilliant"Environment" section!
Bristol's community/voluntary sector is inno small way responsible for Bristol's Green image and credentials, this isa way to show others how much you are doing. There are two layers that you canmark your projects/places on:
Green City
The aim of this is to produce a picture of what individuals, community groups, charities and businesses are doing to make Bristol greener. Add your ownprojects and/or search for markers by category. If your projects are city-wideor national please mark where your offices are or where you most regularly meet.
Quiet Spaces
Bristol City Council has just launched a consultation on traffic noise. Usingthis layer, you can add your favourite quiet place so that we can build a map ofvalued spaces in the city. The noise consultation will feed into the NoiseAction Plan for the city and help the council in developing a noise strategy forBristol.
What to do?
It's really simple; click on the map to create a marker. Then fill in theform; you can also upload a picture or a small video clip!
There aren't many projects marked yet as we only went live lastThursday...so start adding:
a) your favourite quiet spaces or places you would like to be quieter.
b) your projects, social enterprises, community allotments, houses,gardens...etc and tell others what you are doing/going to do to make Bristol anicer, greener place to live.
If you're having any trouble in understanding what to do drop Rowan an emailfor you more detailed instructions.

Please help with our Domestic Energy Use survey
Connecting Bristol are a key partner in the DEHEMs (Digital Environment Home Energy Management System) project. DEHEMs is a European Union funded project looking to improve domestic energy efficiency and reduce household emissions. The Bristol component is being delivered by Knowle West Media Centre as part of the Digital Neighbourhoods programme.
The project kicked off in June 2008 and will develop and test an energy monitoring and display system for homes. The project partnership includes a mix of European Local Authorities, businesses and Universities. As part of the development process we would like to gain an understanding of what people are currently thinking and doing with regard to energy use.
With this in mind we have created a short survey of 20 questions, which should take no more than 10 minutes to complete. We value your opinion and would appreciate it if you could complete the survey - see here.

CLOSED DOORS PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION: Documenting vacant and disused buildings within Stokes Croft.
It may be 'Open Doors Day' across most of Bristol on Saturday 12 September 2009, but for many Stokes Croft buildings it is Closed Doors every day.
To highlight the number of vacant and derelict buildings, the People's Republic of Stokes Croft (PRSC) and Bristol photographer Liz Eve have put together an outdoor photographic exhibition that takes a peek through the keyholes and behind the shutters, padlocks and boarded-up windows of Stokes Croft. It aims to raise awareness of the presence of these buildings and their impact upon the Stokes Croft area, and to encourage debate about their future possible use.
The exhibition opens on Saturday 12 September 2009, with tours at 11am and 3pm, starting from the PRSC headquarters at 35 Jamaica Street. Alternatively, tour guides can be collected from PRSC or local shops in Stokes Croft.
"Having the chance to get inside some of these buildings has been fascinating," said photographer Liz Eve, . "The starting point of the closed doors project is the photography of the empty or underused spaces which can be found in the area, with a view to demonstrating their potential. We have utilised different viewpoints, lighting or other techniques such as panoramic photography in order to highlight what is usually passed over or not seen by inhabitants or regular visitors to the area."
"This is another example of the local community taking the initiative in order to get things moving" said Chris Chalkley of PRSC. “The photographs will be displayed on the walls of vacant buildings, such as the Grade II listed Carriage Works, which has fallen into dereliction over the past 30 years. This exhibition will certainly encourage ideas about future use for these buildings. Stokes Croft is resurgent, and the people of Stokes Croft will need to bring these diverse and interesting properties back into use, as the community continues to grow, pursuing its destiny, seeking out appropriate and radical solutions for the problems that confront our own Community and those of wider society.”
Behind Closed Doors will be on display between 12 and 26 September 2009 as part of 'Talking up the Croft' – a series of walks, talks and exhibitions to encourage debate about the future of Stokes Croft. The exhibition will go online at www.prsc.org.uk to make it widely accessible and to stimulate discussion
The Closed Doors exhibition is part of a series of events being organised by PRSC to coincide with Urban Design Week in September. Other events will include an exhibition of students’ work from the MA Urban Design course at UWE, various lectures and discussions about Stokes Croft and urban design related issues. These events aim to engage the local community and raise awareness of the complexity of issues that are evident in the built form of Stokes Croft.

Music in the park
Holymead Junior School Choir and Recorders will be performing part of their summer concert in Arnos Court Park, Bath Road, Brislington on Friday 19th June at 6.00 pm. Brislington Enterprise College Students will follow with individual and group performances. This event is one of several to be held in the park over the summer through the Arno's Park Action Group.
Holymead Junior School has an accomplished choir and the school wants to celebrate this with the local community. For many years the same music teacher has dedicated his time passionately to teaching the children to sing and play recorders. He will always say that it is not him but the children, although we all know that they only work hard because they love what they do.
Comment from the Headteacher following this summer's concert was:‘I was told I was in for a treat and WOW!’
The evening will give people a chance to see both primary and secondary children enjoying and sharing their talents.
Bring a blanket or chair, and a drink to enjoy an evening of outstanding singing and musical talent by children from the community. A barbeque will be available.
The Arno's Park Action Group is keen to help both schools celebrate their achievements and, if you are part of a children’s musical group or have an individual talent and would like to take part please feel free to contact us. Find further details at APAG.
BEC would like to invite you to an exciting FREE two hour seminar lead by internationally acclaimed educator Dr George Otero on Tuesday 23rd June from 1-3pm at Brislington Enterprise College.
Dr Otero will help us to explore what it means to create an 'outward looking school' and how this is fundamental to schools promoting community cohesion, i.e. how we live together and deal with differences in society.
Dr Otero co-founded the centre for relational learning in New Mexico and is the founder and director of Las Palomas, a non-profit centre which creates innovative educational programmes for the 21st century. He works extensively with the NCSL ( National College for School Leadership) and has published several books jointly with Maggie Farrar and John West-Burnham, most notably 'Schools and Communities: Working Together to Transform Children's Lives'.
This will be an excellent opportunity for people to explore what an outward school could be like. In doing so, schools will find it very useful as a backcloth to their work on community cohesion . It is NOT just for schools, however: Dr. Otero takes a much wider perspective.
Places will be limited so if you would like to attend this free seminar, please contact Corinne Breingan, Marketing and PR Co-ordinator at Brislington Enterprise College via Corinne or by telephoning 0117 377 2055.
We're holding an information event next Wednesday 24 June to show residents living around the Hungerford Road garage site the plans for redevelopment of the site. We're working with Sarsen Housing Association to develop the site for housing.
The event is being held at the Hungerford Community Centre on Hungerford road from 4.30pm to 6.30pm. It is primarily aimed at local residents who will be effected by the development. We have also invited the ward councillors and I wondered whether the neighbourhood partnership would also like to send a representative to come and view the plans on behalf of the group?
It's a drop in event rather than a formal meeting. The project team will be on hand to answer any questions.

Regards
Owen

Community groups, council and Tesco work together to clear litter:
10am on Saturday 21 February 2009.
All Welcome!
Newly formed Sustainable Knowle have joined forces with Sustainable Brislington, Friends of Callington Road Nature Reserve, Sustrans volunteers, Bristol City Council's Clean and Green team and Tesco to organise a litter pick and vegetation clearance on Saturday 21 February. The footpath area around Tesco, Brislington is frequently strewn with abandoned bags, wrappers and other litter. Residents have decided that it is time to clear up the area to make it a cleaner and more pleasant place to walk.
Residents and members of the community groups, along with Tesco staff, will be clearing the area from 10am. If you wish to get involved with the litter pick simply turn up at the recycling bins at Tesco at 10am on wearing sturdy shoes and warm clothing. Some equipment will be provided by Sustrans & Bristol City Council's Clean and Green team but do please bring your garden tools if you are able, secateurs & shears are useful for cutting back encroaching vegetation.

In this weather ice-free paths are essential for our safety. However, the council don't grit paths: apparently residents are meant to, even on major pedestrian commuter routes.
The following is a petition to Bristol CC to grit cycle and foot paths in icy weather - if you agree sign up and tell your friends!
There's some good news about Bristol's Green City project - see the Noticeboard for more information
You've made your New Years resolutions to get fit, lose weight and save money, so why not do all three at once?

The Transport for Greater Bristol Alliance (see here for more details) will be holding a public meeting at the Jury's Hotel, Prince St on Tues 9th December 7.30pm to discuss improving local transport in 2009 which we believe will be a crunch year for transport. Will we get an Integrated transport Authority or continue with the West of England partnership, a South Bristol Link Road or improved public transport, a tram or a guided bus?
Members of the public, councillors and activists are invited to join our panel in a debate.
The chief speaker will be Christian Wolmar who is a leading transport writer on rail issues and an ex Transport Correspondent of the Indepedent. Cat Hobbs, who was involved in FOSBR's successful Severn Beach campaign, is now Campaign for Better Transport's public transport campaigner and has been involved in national policy on buses. Josh Hart will talk about his widely publicised recent study 'Driven to Excess' on the impacts of traffic on the lives of residents of three Bristol streets and his conclusions for local transport policy.
Speakers and questions addressed to them will last until 8.45pm. Then there will be refreshment break and after the interval questions to the panel including the speakers and Pip Sheard, who will chair the meeting.
Please come and let your colleagues and other people you think may be interested know about the meeting. This is important for Bristol, so the more poeple who come, the louder our voice can be.
