Friends of Eastwood Farm

Greetings!

Where is Eastwood Farm?

The site can be accessed by road from Whitmore Avenue in Broomhill (just off Broomhill Road, almost opposite Brislington Police Station), and by foot from Wyndham Crescent and Eastwood Road.

What is There?

The site is owned by Bristol City Council. Formerly farmland, it was purchased by the council and used as a landfill site in the 1970s. Tipping finished in 1978 and since then the area has undergone extensive landscaping, resulting in the beautiful open space we see today. Bordered on one side by watermeadows alongside the River Avon, it offers something for almost everyone – including (dog) walkers, fishermen, birdwatchers, nature lovers and joggers.

A visit to Eastwood Farm may result in sightings of swans, kingfishers, buzzards, squirrels, rabbits, herons, mallards, moorhens, coots and many more. You may even see our ‘Parkie’ – City Council employee, Julian Thomas – a genial Bill Oddie lookalike who is a mine of information on the site and its wildlife.

What is ‘The Friends of Eastwood Farm’?

A local community group, founded in 2003, which aims to improve the site and prevent anti-social behaviour problems. We hold regular meetings (which are attended by our local councillor, the police and the council’s Local Nature Reserves Officer) at which everybody is welcome. In addition, working parties are held throughout the spring and autumn. These are a way of achieving positive results whilst having fun – all ages welcome!

How do I Contact ‘The Friends of Eastwood Farm’?

Meetings are generally held on the second Tuesday of each month in the meeting room above the Co-op store on Broomhill Road, starting at 7.15pm. However, we sometimes change the venue (eg: a recent open evening was held at Broomhill Infants’ School) or date, so please contact us before making a special journey.

Further information can be obtained from SALLY OLDFIELD, Local Nature Reserves Officer for Bristol City Council. She can be contacted on 0117 9 22 4429 or by email to Sally. We thank Sally for her ongoing support of the group.
