REVIEW OF THE YEAR 2008
The last year has seen…
- BCP become a Neighbourhood Partnership, facilitated by Bristol City Council, especially Lorna Heaysman and our four councillors, Simon Crew, Barbara Lewis, Peter Main and Jackie Norman.
- Launch of Community Action Plan at Arno's Park Action Group's Summer Fun Day in July. Thanks to Mark Leach and Steve Marriott in the Environmental and Sustainability Unit for all of their hard work with us.
- Launch of the Brislington Issues e-Democracy Forum in September.
- Brislington Community Partnership has continued to develop strong links with other groups in Bristol, especially through opportunities created by Voscur.
- BCP has been an active member of Bristol Neighbourhood Planning Network. As part of Bristol NPN we have participated in the community involvement exercises for the production of a number of high-level policy documents. These have included: Bristol City Council’s Local Development Framework, the South West Regional Spatial Strategy and BCP had a pivotal role in helping BCC to produce its Statement of Community Involvement—widely regarded among professionals and academics as a benchmark for CI.
- BCP has encouraged members of the community to engage with BCC officers in the production of an Area Green Space Plan for Brislington and with the Garage Strategy Project. The Area Green Space Plan welcomed BCP's close involvement, which the Garage Strategy Project were not able to accommodate BCP as stakeholders.
- Working with BCP's Wicklea Shadow Management Group, we have continued to fight for the future of Wicklea and for greater use of its facilities, though the hoped for take-over by Young Bristol appears to have stalled.
- Creation of Brislington Community Partnership Ltd to ease access to outside funding and a vehicle suitable for a potential community asset transfer in the future. We pursue charitable status.
In furtherance of the CAP BCP, its members and partners have:
- Obtained funding through BCC to ensure ongoing outreach work within the Respect project.
- issued a call for projects that will address specific actions in the CAP. 4 projects per annum @ £2k max each will be funded.
- Worked closely with the Bristol Extended Schools Partnership to identify ways in which the CAP could be delivered through ESP. Many thanks to Ann Stobbs for her tireless work.
- Supported Reflex Camera Club's application to Awards for All, to fund the purchase of digital imaging and projection equipment to be used in the community.
- been involved in project work associated with Brislington Brook in Nightingale Valley (thanks are due to Andy Grant of Friends of Nightingale Valley)
- facilitated a training & employment initiative between the Learning Community Team, City of Bristol College and a local employer. If this pilot scheme works (initial indications are very good) we will push to roll it out to other employers across the two wards
- established a community transport initiative to ensure that residents from across Brislington can access monthly meetings at a range of venues.
- continued the Respect project. We have a new Briz-Skate project and are helping with the start-up of a boxing club at Wicklea
- created a Planning sub-group to address planning applications and begin production of a Local Area Plan for Brislington
- created a Younger people and Leisure group, which has been involved in ascertaining local concerns about the future of Jubilee Pool.
- performed map regression and archaeological field walk activities to assess potential for horticultural re-use of land to rear of Wicklea
- adopted Partners And Communities Together as a regular agenda item, with numerous local issues resolved on a monthly basis.
- begun the re-design of the BCP website to reflect our activities better and to be a more effective communication tool for everyone in the community.
- Collaborated with John Leah, a researcher from Lancaster University, on issues around local use of green spaces.
- Collaborated with University of West of England and University of Bristol to identify Lifelong Learning Opportunities in Brislington
