Com. Dev./YPS Support
Jenny Jones continues to provide admin support to BCP & Respect.
4. Projects
Football Project
We were unsuccessful in our application for funding from the Quartet "Mall Fountain Fund". However, Quartet Community Foundation has sent a cheque from the Deeley Freed fund (which QCF administer). BCP Secretary (Angela Piccini) to send letter of thanks/invitation to meet project.
Zoe Holloway intends an application to Youth Opportunities Fund for finance for more football training sessions. This for the May applications round.
The Police Community Fund may be a possible source of additional funding for diversionary project work. AB to investigate.
Skateboard Project
Youth Opportunities Fund application has rolled over to the May funding round. This to fund a portable skate park.
5. Street Based Workers
AB & NS both very positive and complimentary about the work and effectiveness of the street team.
A trainee youth worker has become available to respect and will be on attachment to the street team for 15 weeks over the summer period.
The street team is very concerned about evidence of racist behaviour that they are encountering. AB was able to provide information, contacts and materials to help combat this. Training can be made available.
Tim and Kay are aware of possible graffiti project to help counter racism.
SC reported that a number of Somali young people attended Wicklea recently to play pool & football. There was a good and positive mixed race atmosphere.
Regarding weapons/gang culture, Police are willing to do a presentation/hold debate but there are limitations to what police facilitation of such events can achieve. Other deliverers may be more effective? Police may do knife talk at Lazer if requested.
6. Future of Wicklea
David Waters presented our case to full Council on 27th March. Apparently well received.
A 25-year lease by BCC to Young Bristol appears to be in the offing.
The possible (but strongly resisted) roadway across the Wicklea site to the potential development land at the rear would present a major obstacle to the transfer to YB on safety grounds.
7. Dispersal Areas
Much clearing-up has been done, football coaching has been laid on for 6 weeks - hopefully some additional coaching will be provided at Wicklea also. It is hoped that Basketball coaching can be made available too. As a result of the detached youth work going on in the dispersal areas it has been noticed that more YP are now coming to Wicklea. There is a good gender mix.
Additional activities proposed for Wicklea: Self-defence classes (particularly for young females), Basketball coaching, Jackpot Drama Group plus other activities.
Wicklea staff are to undergo Gang Awareness and Asylum-Seeker training.
Victory Park has sustained significant damage/vandalism. The play area has been badly burned and is full of broken glass. A proposal has come from the community to install a youth shelter at the top of the park, well away from the play area and Castlegate House.
8. Co-ordination of Youth Groups
Nothing to report on this topic. It may be possible to make better progress if/when YB take lead role at Wicklea.
9. AOB
A volunteer has come forward to do football coaching and other youth work in the Eastwood Park area.
10. Date of next meeting
7.30pm, Wednesday 6th June 2007, Wicklea.
