1. Minutes of the last meeting
These were agreed with the following matters arising:
BYCA bids for BEC & Wicklea (also Bedminster) have secured funding. Activities comprise Kayaking/canoeing, caving, climbing and others.
AYA bus will be going out to Eastwood Park, but there may be issue surrounding parking & generator noise. Suggested that bus staff liase with staff at the care home at Eastwood.
Police are delivering a knife crime related event at Wicklea on 18th July.
The self-defence classes at St Peters were popular and well supported, they finished last week. Participants were working towards a Bronze award and it is proposed to run a photography project (also at St Peters) during the summer to aid progress to these awards.
Zoe's funding application to Youth Opportunities Fund is to be resubmitted.
2. Finance
3. Projects
Football Project
The football project is going really well.
Basketball Project
The coach has not been showing up. Additional funding may help with this, currently this activity is not happening.
Skateboard Project
Tim & Kay report that the Youth Opportunities Fund & Youth Capital Fund applications have secured funding which should become available in 2-4 weeks.
One skate ramp has already been donated and an approach to a carpenter/teacher is anticipated to show/help with building of further equipment. Possible approach to graffiti artist to decorate ramps? Hopefully the project will begin as soon as the money arrives.
Possible pizza as congrats to YP on success of their funding application.
4. Street Based Workers
TN & KS were able to convey criticisms of local play equipment, some of which constitute Health & Safety issues.
Eastwood Park basketball hoops give the impression of an "L" shaped court and are too close to the youth shelter.
Arno's Vale Park has a number of maintenance issues including litter & flooding of the “BMX park” and a lack of pitch markings for the 5-a-side football.
The Wicklea basketball court is of poor design (inadequate fence height at nets), the bushes are overgrown and the court boundary (brick walls) is damaged. Expensive repair work here is probably delayed by uncertainty over future status of Wicklea.
Action: BCP secretary to write to BCC.
5. Wicklea
BCC appear to have abandoned plans for an access route past Wicklea to the land at the rear of the building. BCC have agreed 25-yr. lease of Wicklea to Young Bristol. YB may need to seek longer in light of the poor condition of the building and the additional outlay that this will entail in repair works.
Respect project will participate in future BYCA bids.
A machine maintenance and road safety project would appear to be a good idea for the future. Possible resources would include "Operation Biker" and the "Ride to Arrive" team.
SC reported that the YPS/ESP/Connexions road-show event was well-supported (70-80 YP attended) and gained very positive feedback from all. Excellent reports, "best in the city yet"! A previously banned individual caused a small disturbance at the end of the evening.
"Ability Sport" wish to use Wicklea (10-12 and 1-3 on Mon & Fri) for young disabled sportsmen and women of 19-25 yrs. Projected start date of 16th July. Possibly use Sat & Sun afternoons also. Because YP are involved this would be a free let.
6. Any Other Business
Police have been asked to put "Counter-Terrorism" on the agenda of any community group meeting that they attend. This is not a reaction to events in the last few days, but has been in the pipeline for a while.
7. Date of next meeting
7.30pm, Wednesday 1st August, Wicklea.
