A typed note glued to the back of this postcard explains the scene as a garden party given by Squire Alfred Clayfield-Ireland for Belgian refugees. Presumably this gathering took place in the grounds of Brislington Hall (demolished in 1933, its site being beneath one of the units and the car park of Brislington Retail Park opposite the junction of Bonville Road with the A4 Bath Road.

In the centre of the front row, holding his bowler hat, is the squire himself. To the left of him as we look at the photograph, is Rev Harmon (vicar of St Luke's), and to the right of the squire is the minister of the Congregational church, Rev Ignatius Jones and his wife. Counting to our left of Rev Harmon, the fourth person is Mr Macnab, the squire's bailiff.

In the next to last row, fifth from our right-hand side, is Hilda Attenbrow (later Mrs Took). In the last row, fourth from our right-hand side, is Fred West, a monumental mason and publisher of many Brislington postcards.

The photograph was taken by William Albert Winchester. Visit our notes for more information about this photographer and postcard publisher, and their work in Brislington.
