This picture is credited to photographer and postcard publisher Fred Little. Its title is 'Arno's Castle, Bristol. The Great Hall.' Printed as a postcard using the collotype method, this photograph of the interior shows the use of the premises as an antiques shop (the credit on the back of the postcard reads 'Little & Barber, buyers of Old English Furniture and Works of Art.') Most of the items for sale in this room are wooden tables and chairs; the tiger skin rug adds a note of the macabre.

This building is rather better known nowadays as the Black Castle public house at St Phillips Causeway, and is an 18th century Grade 1 listed building. Earliest known picture: printed before 3 June 1918.

Visit our notes for more information about this photographer and the postcard publisher, and their work in Brislington.
